Guide

A random cortisol result only makes sense with the collection time, your meds, and your sleep schedule, since cortisol rises in the early morning and falls

Cortisol varies by the hour, so the right test window depends on the sample type and what your clinician is checking.

A saliva cortisol result makes the most sense when you match the number to timing, collection rules, and your pattern across the day.

Salivary cortisol tracks the free (active) hormone at collection time, so timed samples can show whether your daily rise-and-fall pattern looks typical.

A sudden cortisol rise is usually brief; repeated high readings with new symptoms call for medical testing.

Cortisol usually falls toward midnight; if it climbs at night, sleep timing, light, or health factors may be pushing your stress system off-beat.

Cortisol usually peaks soon after waking, then eases downward through afternoon and reaches its low point overnight.

High cortisol can change appetite, acid, and gut motility, which may lead to nausea, cramps, reflux, or urgent bathroom trips.

Cortisol can sharpen memory in short bursts, yet repeated or long-lasting spikes can make recall fuzzier and new learning harder.

Cortisol swings can shift energy, sleep, and outlook; steady routines often smooth the dips and spikes.
