Most first attempts at a telescope fail in the first five minutes: the finder points one way, the tube points another, and the Moon never shows up. Once the finder and eyepiece agree on the same target, finding anything in the night sky becomes a straightforward process.

Set Up On A Stable Surface First

A telescope on a shaky mount is useless at any magnification. Set the tripod or base on solid ground, not a deck that vibrates when you walk. Extend the legs to a comfortable height and lock everything firmly.

Balance matters before you look through the eyepiece. If the tube swings freely when you release it, tighten the mount’s tension or friction knobs just enough to hold position while still allowing smooth movement. Most beginner guides stress partial tightening after rough balancing, then fine adjustments once the tube stays where you put it.

Keep the mount and tube secure before touching the slow-motion controls, or the whole assembly will shift when you turn a knob.

The Daytime Practice That Makes Night Viewing Work

Every beginner manual, including Orion’s StarBlast guide and Celestron’s materials, recommends the same training exercise: practice in daylight on a distant object before ever pointing at the night sky.

Start with the lowest-power eyepiece—the one with the highest millimeter number, usually 20mm or 25mm. It gives the widest field of view and the brightest image, making targets far easier to locate. Insert it into the focuser on a Newtonian reflector or into the diagonal on a refractor or Schmidt-Cassegrain.

Pick a distant target: a telephone pole, chimney, rooftop antenna, or power pole at least a few hundred yards away. Point the tube roughly at it and look through the eyepiece. Turn the focus knob until the image is sharp.

Now align the finder. Look through the finder or red-dot sight and adjust its screws until the same target sits centered in the finder’s crosshair or dot while it remains centered in the eyepiece. This step is not optional—if the finder is misaligned, the object may be in the telescope’s field but invisible in the finder, making acquisition nearly impossible.

Once both views agree, the finder becomes your aiming tool. At night, use it to bring any target into the eyepiece field, then fine-tune with the slow-motion controls or mount adjustments.

Finding Objects And Switching Eyepieces At Night

After dark, start bright. The Moon is the classic first target; a bright star or planet like Jupiter also works well. Look through the finder, center the object in its crosshair, then look through the eyepiece. The target should be visible or close to it—use the slow-motion controls to center it fully.

Stay at low power until the object is centered and focused. Only then switch to a higher-power eyepiece, and refocus after every change. Different users with different eyesight will also need their own focus adjustment.

Using App-Controlled And Computerized Telescopes

Computerized mounts remove most of the aiming work. Celestron’s free SkyPortal app, powered by SkySafari, works with compatible WiFi telescopes like the NexStar Evolution and Astro Fi WiFi, plus any Celestron scope fitted with the SkyPortal WiFi Module (formerly SkyQ-Link). The app runs on iOS and Android.

Setup takes a few minutes. Connect your phone to the telescope’s WiFi in Direct Connect or WLAN (Access Point) mode, open the app, tap the telescope icon, and choose Connect and Align. Confirm your location and time, then follow the in-app alignment prompts.

Most mounts use SkyAlign, which asks you to point at three bright objects; the system then aligns itself. Once aligned, tap GOTO on any object and the mount slews to center it in the eyepiece. The Celestron SkyPortal app page lists compatible hardware and setup details.
